The LAGOS Family Jewelry Box

We are taking a trip through the LAGOS family jewelry box with Kate Lagos! Read below for her quotes about each piece from the wonderful and diverse LAGOS collection.

“This piece is one of my favorites, as well as my grandmother’s who wore it all the time – so much the catch wore out and had to be updated 5 years ago. It’s one of the first gold pieces my father ever made. He was just learning the craft when my Grandfather commissioned him to make something special for her 46th birthday, in 1979. It’s made of solid 18k gold and you can feel the love. There are 8 links, each in a shape of lips; leaving her a wrist of kisses!”

“This piece is both a pin and an enhancer. It was one of my father’s first production pieces (he made about 35 of these in different colors). It’s made of 18 karat gold with a custom cut “sea-foam” aquamarine center stone. It also features pink tourmaline, blue sapphire cabochons and five diamonds. My grandmother, who we called yiayia (Greek for grandmother) would love to wear this piece as a pin on her coat collar. She also had the option to wear it as a necklace as it was designed to be clipped onto pearls (pictured) or worn on a flat gold chain. This was gifted to her for Christmas in 1983.”

“These bracelets are so fun! One of my father’s first signature pieces. The Wave bracelet. The Waves were created in 1985 and were the first pieces of LAGOS ever advertised in Town and Country magazine. These distinct bracelets were a huge hit. This was my father’s version of the popular “tennis bracelet” fad. The Wave was popular because of the dimension and texture it added to your wrist. They were available in 4 different color options, all in solid 18k gold. Over the years my father gifted my grandmother these one at a time, for different occasions. First the diamond wave, then emerald – which was her favorite stone – ruby as the third and finally blue sapphire to complete the set. All designed to be worn together. This was the beginning of the LAGOS stacking trend!”

A Message From LAGOS Jewelry Founder Steven Lagos for Mother’s Day

A note from Steven Lagos, our Founder and Creative Director:

“This will be the first Mother’s Day without my Mom. She left in late February after a brief bout with brain cancer. She was 88 years young when she passed, and was vibrant and smiling until the end.

I miss her terribly. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t think about giving her a call or remember a fun moment we shared. In cleaning out her house we came across her jewelry box. You can imagine the collection she has. I first gave my mother a piece of jewelry for Mother’s Day in 1969, I was 12 years old. I can clearly remember going to the counter at Gimbels in Philadelphia and painstakingly selecting a “Sun” pendant made from base metal on a long chain – I think it cost me $12. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of a long tradition of gifting her jewelry for every occasion for the rest of her life.

The interesting thing that struck me the most was this “Sun” was right at the very top of her jewelry box. It was carefully placed to be the first thing she saw. As you can imagine, her collection is the most extensive collection of LAGOS jewelry that I know of. Pieces from the very beginning with experimental forays made from silver flatware and turquoise to one-of kind pieces using rubies, emeralds and precious materials. Jewels created during my many years of mastering my skills and defining my style, it contained a physical evolution of my craft and history of my career. You need to understand, there are over 500 pieces in her collection, some costing tens of thousands of dollars and yet, there it was, this silly piece that she cherished and saw every time she opened the box. It completely reinforced my idea that a gift of jewelry is a very powerful thing.

Throughout the rest of this year, I am going to highlight some of the pieces in her collection, the occasions they marked and the stories they tell. I plan to share these exceptional (and not so exceptional) treasures through the eyes of my daughter Kate on Instagram.

I want to wish every Mom a happy Mother’s Day; and look forward to hearing from you soon. Stay tuned and be well.”

Keep Memory Alive: A LAGOS Collection

For more than 20 years, LAGOS has supported Keep Memory Alive and its efforts to research and care for those suffering from brain diseases.   It is a cause that is very close to Founder and Creative Director Steven Lagos. He watched his grandparents suffer from Alzheimer’s, witnessing firsthand the toll it can take on families and caregivers alike. Through this experience he realized how difficult it is for everyone involved and has been committed to Keep Memory Alive ever since.

In addition to making generous donations in the name of research, Steven designed an exclusive sterling silver collection inspired by the intricate curvature of the Foundation’s Frank Gehry-designed headquarters.  In the words of Steven Lagos, “Jewelry is a physical manifestation of memories… it was important for me to create something that would act as a memory in itself, while giving back to this fantastic organization that focuses on memory disorders.”

As a result, 100 percent of the purchase of the collection benefits Keep Memory Alive.  The proceeds benefit the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and its research.  To make your own contribution you can shop the latest LAGOS designs or make a donation to the center here.

Royal Wedding Approved

Jewelry for the Wedding of the Season

In honor of the Royal Wedding we sat down with Jenna Colgrove of the fashion blog Visions of Vogue to get her take on the event.  Jenna is a self-proclaimed, “sucker for all things Royal” and cannot wait to see the dress Meghan Markle chooses to walk down the aisle.   Ahead of the big day Jenna is wearing some of her favorite LAGOS pieces to celebrate the glamour of the day.

Meghan Markle is the ‘California cool’ American actress joining the Royal family this spring and she has a style that celebrates her roots.  Taking notes from Meghan’s style Jenna chose to mix pieces from two of our most luxe collections: Diamond Lux and Caviar Spark.  These collections feature diamonds and caviar beading set in a classic design. Each piece is a beautiful nod to traditions, made for celebrating milestones and passing down jewelry from one generation to the next.

Jenna chose the Diamond Lux Diamond Ring and Diamond Lux Bracelet as traditional styles perfect for bride or wedding guest alike.  To add a bit of modern styling to her look Jenna added several pieces from the Caviar Spark Collection.  She wears the Caviar Spark Diamond Bracelet alongside her Diamond Lux piece.  For necklace she keeps it simple with a Caviar Spark Diamond Necklace and of course, drop earrings.

While Jenna may not be on the guest list you can be sure she’ll be tuning in on May 19th to watch the Royal Nuptials, wearing her favorite LAGOS pieces of course!

cfda-feature-steven-lagos-jewelry-designer

This month, designers and celebrities took to New York for the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards. The CFDA is a prestigious organization of the foremost fashion & accessories designers in the country.  Our very own Steven Lagos, designer and founder of LAGOS, took center stage as a featured member on the CFDA website.

The CFDA shared a bit of Steven’s backgrounds and the history of LAGOS. 40 years ago this summer, Steven began designing jewelry in Philadelphia and started his namesake brand. He always knew he wanted to create jewelry. “Jewelry is eternal and one of the most personal forms of art,” he shares.

LAGOS has evolved over the years, from the introduction of our exclusive Caviar design in 1984 to the arrival of Black Caviar in 2015, to a brilliant silver & diamond collection called Caviar Spark in 2017.

CFDA recognizes Steven for his beautiful designs, which are inspired by the art and culture he spots while traveling around the world. In addition, he is forever inspired by the LAGOS woman, the muse that represents bold femininity.

Join us in celebrating Steven Lagos and learning more about the CFDA here.

How To: Luna Pearls & Signature Caviar

STYLING TIPS

style tip pearls signature caviar

The unique, natural allure of the freshwater cultured pearl makes the ideal design to mix, match and make your own. Throughout antiquity, and even today, pearls are prized because of their rarity. Pearls, unlike any other precious gemstone, need no enhancement their captivating beauty.

Awaken classic pearls with the luxe texture of Signature Caviar bracelets. Luna pieces layer together with an Enso and open link bracelet for a play on shapes. We imagine this as a flawlessly transitional stack—start in the morning with two or three bracelets and after work add a few more as you head out for drinks!

bridal jewelry pearls white caviar

Praised as the ‘Queen of Gems’, pearls are thought to give wisdom through experience. Ancient Greeks first used pearls as part of the wedding ceremony – believing the sacred pearls would bring love and happiness. Pearls remain a symbol of power, happiness and honor. This meaning makes the Luna collection the ideal wedding day jewelry, especially the strand bracelets or rings.

A classic flourish for every occasion, LAGOS pearls effortlessly mix with Signature Caviar or Black Caviar for a unique look that is all your own. See more style inspiration and tips on the MY LAGOS MY WAY page.
